Carbon black is the most effective and least expensive UV stabiliser available to the plastics industry. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation across the damaging wavelengths and converts it to heat, and unlike organic stabilisers it does not get consumed doing so. A well-formulated black polyolefin part will outlast an unpigmented one outdoors by an order of magnitude.
Which is exactly why the question gets asked badly. Buyers ask for “black masterbatch with UV” and assume the black is the UV package. Sometimes it is. Often it is not, and the difference shows up in year two.
How much carbon black do you actually need?
The figure most widely used across the industry is around 2 to 2.5% carbon black in the finished part for long-term outdoor exposure in polyolefins. Indian and international standards for buried and exposed polyethylene pipe converge on that band, and it is the number to work backwards from when you set your let-down.
Note that this is percentage in the finished part, not percentage in the masterbatch. If you are running a 40% carbon black masterbatch and you need 2.5% in the part, your let-down is roughly 6%. Getting this arithmetic wrong in either direction is common and expensive: too little and the part fails early, too much and you are paying for carbon that buys you nothing and may hurt impact properties.
The part everyone gets wrong: dispersion beats loading
This is the single most important thing to understand about carbon black, and it is the reason two parts with identical carbon content can have completely different service lives.
Carbon black only protects the polymer it is actually distributed through. Agglomerated carbon — particles clumped together rather than dispersed as individual primary particles — leaves unprotected polymer between the clumps. UV gets through, degradation starts there, and the part cracks from those sites regardless of what the total carbon content says on the certificate.
A part at 2% carbon black with excellent dispersion will comfortably outlast a part at 3% with poor dispersion. If you are specifying black masterbatch for outdoor service, dispersion rating matters more than the loading figure, and it is the thing you should be asking your supplier to evidence.
Particle size matters too
Smaller primary particle size gives better UV absorption for the same weight of carbon, because you get more particles and more surface area distributed through the polymer. Fine-particle furnace blacks in roughly the 15 to 25 nanometre range are the usual choice for UV-critical outdoor applications.
Larger-particle blacks are cheaper and perfectly adequate where the job is colour rather than protection — an indoor moulded part, a crate that never sees sun. Using a coarse black for a UV application because the price per kilogram looked better is a false economy that surfaces two summers later.
Where this actually bites
Applications where carbon black loading and dispersion decide whether the product survives its warranty:
- Water pipe and fittings — exposed sections, and long service-life expectations
- Agricultural film and mulch film — a full season of direct exposure, often at high UV index
- Geo-membranes — decades of expected life, and replacement is ruinously expensive
- Tarpaulins and barricades — continuous outdoor service
- Water tanks — permanent roof-top exposure
- Automotive exterior components — both UV and thermal cycling
When carbon black is not enough on its own
Carbon black is excellent at absorbing UV. It does nothing about thermal oxidation, and in a black part sitting in the sun, surface temperature runs well above ambient — which accelerates oxidative degradation even while the UV is being handled.
For demanding outdoor applications the sensible package is carbon black plus an antioxidant, and in some cases a hindered amine light stabiliser as well. What to ask your supplier for
If outdoor life matters, a purchase order that just says “black masterbatch” is not a specification. Ask for:
- Carbon black loading in the masterbatch, and the recommended let-down to reach your target in the part
- Dispersion rating, and the method it was measured by
- Particle size or grade designation of the carbon used
- Whether an antioxidant or HALS package is included or needs to be added separately
- Expected outdoor life for your application and geography
A supplier who can answer all five without hesitating is a supplier who knows what is in their own product.
A note on jetness
One last distinction worth keeping straight, because it causes a lot of crossed wires in specification meetings. Jetness is how deep and neutral the black looks. UV protection is how well the part survives sunlight. They are related — both improve with finer particle size and good dispersion — but they are not the same requirement.
An automotive visible trim part is bought on jetness. A buried geo-membrane nobody will ever look at is bought entirely on protection. Specifying a high-jetness grade for a part that will never be seen is money spent on the wrong property.
