Frequently Asked Questions

How does a fragrance masterbatch work?

The fragrance oil is encapsulated and carried in a resin so it can be dosed as pellets at the machine. The encapsulation protects the volatile compounds through the melt stage, and the fragrance then migrates slowly out of the finished part in use. Without encapsulation, most of a raw fragrance oil would simply flash off in the barrel.

Does the scent survive the processing temperature?

A correctly encapsulated fragrance masterbatch is designed to. Fragrance compounds are volatile, so the practical limit is set by your melt temperature and residence time — the hotter and longer, the more you lose. This is why fragrance works well in polyolefin injection moulding and extrusion, and is much harder in engineering polymer masterbatch at 280°C. Tell us your process conditions before we formulate.

How long does the fragrance last in the finished product?

It depends on the loading, the polymer, the part thickness and how the product is stored. Fragrance migrates from the bulk to the surface and evaporates, so a thicker part holds a reservoir for longer and a sealed pack holds it far longer than an open one. The only reliable answer is from a trial on your own part — which is why we send samples rather than quote a figure.

Can you match a custom scent?

Yes. We hold a range of in-stock fragrance masterbatches and also develop custom-tailored scents to a brief or to a reference sample. Tell us the character you are after, or send the fragrance you currently use, along with the polymer and process.

Which products use fragrance masterbatch?

Typically household goods products, cleaning and storage items, toys, stationery, cosmetics packaging and promotional items — anywhere the scent is part of how the product is experienced. It is also used in recycling masterbatch applications to manage residual odour from recycled material.

Is fragrance masterbatch safe for toys and food-contact products?

Suitability is decided grade by grade against the standard that applies to your product and market, and toys in particular carry their own safety requirements. Tell us the application and the standard you are working to and we will confirm what we can supply against it. See our toys page and our certifications.

Which polymers can it be used in?

It works best in the polyolefins — PE and PP — where processing temperatures are moderate, and is used in styrenics and flexible compounds. Higher-temperature engineering resins are more limited, for the volatility reasons above. Tell us the resin and we will say honestly whether it is a good fit.

Do you manufacture fragrance masterbatch in India?

Yes. Life Color Pigments & Masterbatches is a fragrance masterbatch manufacturer in India, produced at Vasai East, Palghar, Maharashtra, alongside our colour masterbatch, special effect masterbatch and additive masterbatch ranges. Read more about us or contact us.

Tell us the scent you want, the polymer and the process temperature — we will develop a fragrance masterbatch and send a sample so you can judge the release on a real part.
