Frequently Asked Questions

What TiO₂ loading do I need for my product?

It depends on wall thickness, the opacity you are targeting and your polymer. Thin film has no thickness to hide with, so opacity has to come from a high-loaded grade — this is where 70–80 wt% batches earn their price. Thick-wall mouldings often need considerably less, and over-specifying there is pure cost.

What is the difference between rutile and anatase titanium dioxide?

They are two crystal forms of TiO₂ and they are not interchangeable. Rutile is denser, more refractive and far more photostable. Anatase is softer, slightly bluer in tone and cheaper, but it is photocatalytically active — under sunlight it attacks the polymer around it, causing chalking and embrittlement at the surface.

For outdoor and long-life parts we supply coated rutile grades. If a white masterbatch quote looks unusually cheap, ask which grade it uses and whether it is surface-coated — our guide on how to write a masterbatch specification covers what to put in writing.

Which polymers can you supply white masterbatch for?

We match the carrier resin to your polymer so the masterbatch blends into the same phase as your resin rather than sitting in it. Standard carriers cover PE, PP, PET, and the engineering grades — PBT, PA6/66, ABS, SAN, PC and PS.

Tell us the exact grade you run, including whether you are using regrind, and we will match the carrier and the processing window to it. Melt flow index is usually the first number we ask for.

Why has our white product turned yellow?

There are four common causes and only one of them is the pigment: anatase TiO₂ degrading under UV; phenolic antioxidant gas fading; overheating or excessive residence time during processing; or an optical brightener dosed past its peak, where more brightener makes the part yellower rather than whiter.

Three of the four are process problems, which is why changing supplier often does not fix it. Send us your processing conditions and we will work through it.

Can white masterbatch include UV protection?

Yes. Titanium dioxide on its own is not a UV stabiliser system — it scatters light but does not arrest the radical chain reaction that degrades the polymer. A combined white plus UV additive package avoids running a second additive stream at the machine and removes one dosing error.

Can you match a specific shade of white?

Yes. Whiteness is measured on the CIE whiteness index, and different TiO₂ grades and brightener levels shift the tone blue or yellow even at the same opacity.

How is white masterbatch manufactured at Life Color?

Life Color Pigments & Masterbatches is a white masterbatch manufacturer in India, producing at our plant in Vasai East, Palghar, Maharashtra, on single-screw and twin-screw extrusion lines with a capacity of approximately 10,000 MTPA.

Twin-screw compounding is what makes high TiO₂ loadings possible. The distributive and dispersive mixing breaks down pigment agglomerates that would otherwise show as specks in film or cost you opacity at the same loading. Which white masterbatch grade suits each process?

The grade follows the process, because dispersion behaviour and the opacity you can reach at a given thickness change completely between them.
