Frequently Asked Questions

Which masterbatches does the packaging industry use most?

Three do most of the work. White Masterbatches for opacity in film, containers and closures, so light does not reach the contents and print sits on a clean base. Color Masterbatches for brand shade on bottles, caps and pails. And Additive Masterbatches for the functional problems — slip and anti-block on film, anti-fog on chilled packs, antistatic where dust matters, UV where the pack sits outdoors.

How much opacity do I need in a packaging film or bottle?

It is set by the product inside and the wall thickness, not by a general rule. Light-sensitive contents such as dairy, edible oils and some pharmaceuticals need a genuine light barrier, which at thin gauges means a high loading of well-dispersed titanium dioxide, and often a black inner layer in a multilayer structure. Tell us your gauge and what you are protecting against and we will specify against it — see White Masterbatches.

Can you supply masterbatch for food-contact packaging?

Food-contact suitability is decided grade by grade against the specific regulation or customer specification that applies, so tell us which one you are working to and we will confirm what we can supply against it. Our certifications are listed on the site. Related: PET Masterbatches for bottles and trays, and pharma for healthcare packaging.

My film is blocking on the reel. What do I add?

Anti-block, slip, or both, depending on the symptom. Blocking on the reel is usually an anti-block problem — the layers are achieving too much intimate contact. Film that will not open on the bagging machine is usually a slip problem. Both affect printing and sealing, so they have to be balanced rather than maximised. Our article on anti-block and slip on film works through it, and the grades are in our Additive Masterbatches range.

What do woven sacks and FIBCs need?

UV protection sized against real outdoor exposure, because tape degrades and loses tensile strength long before it looks damaged — a sack that fails on a loaded bag is a safety problem. The stabiliser package should be specified against the service life you are quoting, not chosen generically. See UV masterbatch for woven sacks and FIBC and our Additive Masterbatches range.

Why does my brand colour look different between the bottle and the cap?

Because they are usually different polymers, different wall thicknesses and different processes — an HDPE blow moulded bottle and a PP injection moulded closure will not read identically from the same formulation. The fix is to match each component separately against the same target, on its own substrate and geometry. See Color Masterbatches and why colour drifts between batches.

Do you supply masterbatch for PET bottles and preforms?

Yes, and PET needs a PET-carrier masterbatch rather than a polyolefin-carried one, or you get haze and weak points in the preform wall. Our PET Masterbatches range is formulated for preforms, bottles, sheet, trays and thermoformed products.

Can I use recycled content in my packaging?

Where the regulation for your market permits it, yes — and colour is usually the practical obstacle rather than the polymer. Recyclate carries a variable base colour, so deep shades and black masterbatch are far easier than clean pastels. Our Recycling Masterbatches range covers the colour and additive side; see also masterbatch for recycled and PCR plastic and our sustainability approach.

Do you supply packaging masterbatch in India?

Yes. Life Color Pigments & Masterbatches is a packaging masterbatch manufacturer in India, producing at Vasai East, Palghar, Maharashtra for industrial, consumer and material handling packaging. Read more about us or contact us.

Tell us the pack format, the polymer and whether it is food contact — we will recommend a colour and additive package and send a sample to trial on your own line.
